Find out more about Key Stage 2 and the classes.
Key Stage 2 consists of eleven classes; these cater for children with profound and multiple difficulties, children with severe learning difficulties, and some children with moderate learning difficulties. All classes include children on the autistic spectrum. The average class size across the Key Stage is nine children.
All classes have one full time teacher and one full time LSW. Classes which support the needs of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties have extra LSW's depending on the individual needs of the children.
Many children within Key Stage 2 benefit from regular input from the Speech Therapy and Physiotherapy departments. Approximately 50% of children also enjoy taking part in a Social Use of Language Programme, (SULP) on a weekly basis.
All children follow National Curriculum schemes of work, differentiated to cater for individual needs. Individual Education Plans are drawn up for every child and linked to Annual Review targets. Individual Education Plans are reviewed each term.
Progress is assessed on 'P' levels, SAT's results where relevant and moderated examples of work for all subjects.
Some classes within the Key Stage link together for specific subjects enabling specialist subject teaching/team teaching as appropriate. 'Booster groups' to support Literacy and Numeracy work operate, usually in the latter part of the Autumn term and during the Spring term.
Key Stage 2 joins Key Stage 1 for a weekly Primary Assembly. We also link together on other occasions throughout the year for events such as Harvest Festival and Christingle. Key Stage 2 also links with Key Stage 3 through a 'Buddy system'.
This system links two classes to encourage good behaviour and promote self esteem.
Key Stage 2 children also share the Dining Hall with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 children.
We also try to maintain links with mainstream schools, in particular with Longlevens Junior School. During the Summer term, KS2 children from both schools take part in a very successful dance project under the guidance of Sarah Shaw from Gloucestershire Dance.
Good behaviour is encouraged through a STAR system. Children gain stars for achieving specific STAR targets. Stars can be spent in the STAR shop.
Children in Key Stage 2 benefit from, and enjoy a pleasant play area, which has been recently equipped with play equipment and playground markings. We are very grateful to Gloucester Round Table, Zurich Insurance and the Friends of The Milestone School for providing the funds for this.
Key Stage 2 is a large Key Stage with a diversity of challenges; it is characterised by a very busy and positive working environment for both children and staff. We work closely with parents, other professionals and staff from other Key Stages and try to maintain links with mainstream schools.
Some pupils with Autistic Spectrum behaviours attend daily Curriulum Enrichment sessions.
