In four classes the curriculum is delivered by the class teacher who is also responsible for the pastoral care of each pupils. These classes are following the accredited scheme ASDAN - Transition Challenge. In two classes the pupils follow a limited circuit for delivery of some subjects by a subject specialist. These two classes are following ASDAN - Life Skills Entry level. These two classes also follow other accredited courses relevant to individual needs. These include AQA - GCSE (Art, Science Single, Maths Foundation); Entry Science, Maths, R.E., English; Units awards ( various ). All accredited work is evidenced and internally moderated. This is then sent for external verification by the awarding board.
The pupils follow schemes of work differentiated to cater for their individual needs for a broad and balanced curriculum. Individual timetables are created linked to Individual Education Plans. A sensory curriculum is delivered, as appropriate, to our pupils. Social Use of Language Programme is provided and the techniques are used by staff in their own curriculum delivery. Life Skills are included to prepare pupils for their adult life. These are developed in the school community and then extended into the local community. We aim to use local facilities wherever and whenever possible. This includes : GL1 swimming; local superstores; local library; local church; Hartpury College . We take part in the Leading Edge projects co-ordinated by the Milestone school including work related; science; learning support.
Work related learning has a high profile in the keystage. All classes are running an enterprise project, with one class following Young Enterprise ( Team Programme). All pupils have the opportunity to take part in a minimum of 5 days work experience planned to meet their individual needs. This may be in school with adult support or independently with local employers. Extended work placements are offered and these include in?school placements supporting other classes and with local employers.
We link with outside agencies : Connexions; Education Business Partnership; Learning Skills Council; Speech and Language therapists; Physiotherapists; Teacher for the Hearing Impaired; University of Gloucestershire ( Aimhigher - Mentoring and Sports students); Sir Thomas Riches school ( MFL and Community work ); South Cerney (water sports); Stackpole ( outdoor pursuits), Brockworth Community school ( environmental project); Stroud college ( Drama)
Pupils are rewarded with merits for good behaviour. These can be spent termly at the 'Merit shop' or saved to spend on an outing. A recent trip to Cadbury's World was most successful. Pupils have access to S.H.A.R.E. a regular counselling service which takes place weekly in the school.
Transition to Post 16 is discussed at length at the transition reviews. Pupils visit all the available provisions and detailed links are set up by class staff with appropriate support and transport. 'Moving On' is the annual event to which all the Post 16 providers are invited to share their prospectus with parents and pupils.
At the end of Year 11 we celebrate the two years in Key Stage 4 with a Progress File presentation afternoon . A well person is invited to present the files to our pupils in front of an audience of parents, friends, staff , governors and all those who have had links with the pupils throughout their Key Stage 4 school life. An event not to be missed as the power point presentation reminds us all of the wonderful experiences we offer to our pupils !
